1:10 PM - 1:40 PM Seeing Really Is Believing: Transforming Your Virtual Training to Become Superior to In-Person Delivery

We’ve all heard the over-quoted statistics that 55% of all human interaction is non-verbal but what are the real implications of this information for training online?

Anthropology can explain so much about why your VILT sessions are rarely as effective as in-person delivery and once you understand why, you’ll experience one of those “Aha!” moments that makes it all clear.

More importantly, you’ll learn what’s needed to transform your training so that “online” can become superior to “in-person”. If you currently use any sort of Virtual Classroom platform then this session will be invaluable to understand why, despite the promises, your current classes are often a poor imitation of the live, in-person experience. And for those who believe that “virtual” classes can never compete with “face-to-face” instruction, be prepared to change your mind. Seeing really is believing!

  • Discover the importance of non-verbal cues and Micro Facial Expressions in human communication
  • Understand why most Virtual Classroom platforms actually limit your ability to teach effectively
  • Learn what’s needed to make larger group training effective - the larger the group, the more important this becomes
  • Discover how making online learners accountable in your online sessions can dramatically improve participation and learning outcomes

1:40 PM - 2:10 PM OMG! How AMC Theatres Moved From PowerPoint to Reality TV To Train Its Millennial and iGeneration Associates

Mike Allison , Vice President, Learning & Development , AMC Theatres
AMC has approximately 26,000 combined Millennial and iGeneration associates. As such, the organization must leverage learning solutions that appeal to younger generations. At its recent Crew Training Summit, AMC took the concept of "creative learning" to a whole new level in developing content that was inspired by the reality television show Undercover Boss. Armed with spy cameras, four directors of operations posed as new crew members and went undercover in theatres. In addition, two undercover guests wreaked havoc in those same theatres. The goal was to use hidden video to capture and reinforce what associates were already doing right while also integrating live training activities. Participants in this session will:
  • Hear directly from AMC’s learning and development leader, who also happened to be one of the undercover guests.
  • View portions of the undercover footage and accompanying learning activities.
  • Learn why the Crew Training Summit content, played in all 660 AMC theatres, yielded the highest engagement, satisfaction, and retention levels from any summit ever held.
  • Hear how AMC is further engaging younger associates through creative uses of media and technology.

More than any other HR Function, L&D organizations are under increased scrutiny to show measurable business impact for their work, as well as operational metrics that show how we are improving the scale and efficiency of our function. In addition, with so much data to track and analyze, organizations are seeing the need for their own data scientists. Your organization’s goals aren’t based on ROI, but on improving key metrics throughout the organization. That’s why the future of learning success will be judged on L&D’s ability to impact business results, not on how many programs earned its money back. Hear how Fortune 500 organizations are using learning analytics tools to align learning improvements with performance metrics to impact revenue, margins, and productivity. After all, if your focus is to positively impact the bottom line in a measurable, repeatable way, then ROI will come naturally.

5:45 PM - 6:15 PM The Learning Engine: How L&D Can Power Culture Change

Mike Kennedy , Associate Vice President, Learning & Leadership Development , NBA
When the NBA’s new commissioner (and CEO) took office in 2014, he quickly made clear that a cultural transformation within the league office would be a top priority of his tenure. Previously, the league had grown by excelling at execution; managers achieved results by prioritizing replication over innovation and steadiness over readiness. But this top-down, execution-first culture would not, the commissioner believed, sustain growth within the new, increasingly global sports and media business landscape. The NBA’s global head of learning and leadership development will describe how the learning function acted not just as enabler or promoter, but as a true driver of the evolution toward employer of choice for an engaged workforce embracing innovation, collaboration, and strategic agility.
 Understand the structural and institutional preconditions for the learning function to assume leadership of major change  Narrow L&D’s focus to prioritize initiatives that most closely align with the objectives of cultural transformation
 Integrate senior executives into leadership development activity to position them as change ambassadors
 Engage intensively with HR leadership to ensure consistency of processes, philosophy, and information flow
